El Tiempo Cantina

Laurenzo’s El Tiempo Cantina is a staple in Houston Mexican Food. Known at all eight locations for it’s consistently fresh Mexican Food and standard setting margaritas.
I visited one of the newer locations on Gessner near Westheimer Road. This particular location has some of my favorite patio seating in the area. A tall fountain of running water with both shaded and sunny options make this patio tops when it comes to enjoying Houston’s blue skies.
El Tiempo is a mainstay as a place to dine with my whole family and is still an excellent adult only spot. The service is simply amazing. They do an excellent job of taking cues of ‘hurry! my kids are about to kill me!’ and ‘we are just here to relax and are in no rush’. Every server is very knowledgeable about the menu and happy to help.
The bar at El Tiempo serves their famous margaritas. With happy hour from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. you simply can’t pass them up! These margaritas y’all, they are made from fresh ingredients: Lime, Triple Sec, Tequila and, humored, a splash of Everclear. It is simply put the best margarita in Texas! They offer many other cocktails all displaying the same El Tiempo standard of freshness. You can’t go wrong!
When seated at El Tiempo you are given chips and salsa. Standard at a Mexican restaurant, right? Not here! The chips are thin and crunchy often hot from just leaving the fryer. The two salsas are amazing and near drinkable. The red is served warm and is medium spicy. The green is cool and creamy. These salsas are a great preview to the meal to come.
We started with the Chorizo Queso Flameados. Melted cheese, house made chorizo, slivered onions and serrano peppers. They stuff this yummy mix into house made flour tortillas table side. This in itself could be a meal and should not be missed.
We also checked out the Ceviche & Brisket Quesadillas. The ceviche is super fresh and has a great punchy lime flavor. The brisket at El Tiempo is always amazing and smoked in house so anything its put in is sublime.
For entrees we ordered some things to share. The chicken and beef filet fajitas were a huge hit! The beef filet is divine, tender and juicy. The fajita meat comes piping hot on a tiny heater so every bite is fresh and warm. Accompanied by the house charro beans, poblano rice and those fresh house made tortillas. The best part about the fajitas here at El Tiempo is the tequila butter that comes with it for dipping, it’s heaven!
We also tried the fresh red snapper fish tacos. The fish was super fresh and it comes with a creamy crunchy slaw that perfects this dish. Some of the best I’ve had.
Not to be missed is the Tres Leches cake. Oh y’all, this cake. It’s what all cakes aspire to be. It’s moist and yet light and topped with fresh mangoes and strawberries. So yummy!
El Tiempo means ‘the time’. To me El Tiempo means excellent food & drinks served with superior hospitality.
